History

Emma Bates was working as an administrator in Hedgehill elementary when she took an interest in the bedraggled state of the school troublemaker, eight-year-old Jude Kilgair. An investigation led to Jude being picked up by child protection services. Emma formally adopted him a year later, a process that was sped up by both of Jude’s parents signing away their rights without a court order.

Devoted Roman Catholics, Emma and her husband Julian raised Jude in the faith. He turned out to be clever, studious, and intensely interested in the church. He took two years to get three bachelor’s degrees in Philosophy, Religious Studies and English History at the University of Gloucestershire, and surprised no one by going into a seminary for his master’s.

He’s now taken position as an associate pastor at St Christopher’s in East London, having spent the last few years in a priory in the Cotswolds. His hobby, inherited from his adoptive father, is the repair and restoration of antique clocks.

Personality

Father Bates’s candidacy was a head-scratcher, and his placement more so. Though his knowledge of the tenets of the faith is encyclopedic and his manners towards superiors exemplary, there was something disquieting about him, and a few too many cases where he was suspected, if not caught, misbehaving. However, priests were needed, so out her went to a ministry at last.

Father Bates does not seek out conflict, but lies constantly, and has no compunctions against either bending the rules or using people’s weaknesses against them. Even so he relishes the performance of his duties and gives the best spiritual guidance he can, unless he has a reason not to. He is fascinated by people. That, and his love of complex bodies of data, lies at the core of his interest in religion.

History

Festus’s father Roger was a professor of classics at Eton for twenty years, then at the university of Aberdeen, which left his sons Festus and Julius a mixed accent of Southern posh with undertones of Scottish. Their mother Julia was a homemaker until her 60s, when her paintings suddenly began to sell. Now she has a gallery in London. Roger Hunnicutt died in 1997.

Festus developed an interest in antiques at a precocious age, though it took him a while to realize this, as discussions at home had led him to think everyone knew the difference between early and late Victorian woodwork. He trained himself to pick up bargains at antique fairs and apprenticed at an auction as a teenager before going off to university, which was a whole different adventure altogether. He graduated a little overdue with a degree in English history. Despite his father’s wishes that he would become an educator, he knew he was headed right back to the auction hall.

Now with nearly forty years of experience in the business he runs a successful auction house and showroom at Hunnicutt Antiques. His relationship with his mother is warm, and with his brother, complicated, verging on antagonistic. Julius Hunnicutt never achieved the kind of success Festus did and the imagined disapproval of their deceased father is a bone of contention between them.

Personality

Festus thinks quickly when it comes to items for sale or assessing a potential buyer or a market–a skill that comes from years of experience and loving focus. Otherwise he likes to mull things over, especially embarrassing things like wants, needs and fears. He has had a lot of quiet contemplative time to himself, however, and believes he has ordered his mind and emotions as well as could be expected. He likes his privacy, but truth be told, he is a little lonely.

History

Prudence began as a Cinderella story. Her first few years were tough, living with a strict and absent father and a mother who had begun to tipple almost as soon as Prudence was out of the womb. At nine, found malnourished in a dirty apartment with an empty fridge, she was snapped up by her wealthy aunt Amelia and her education finished as the third favourite daughter of a yoghurt magnate.

Pru knew she would never be free of her background, so even as her confidence grew to the point of arrogance she began to engage with it. This led her to law school, where she intended to attack the system that had allowed the deterioration of her birth family.

At the age of 32, already tired of the hopeless battle against systematic injustice, she received an offer from an upscale law firm. She took it and never looked back. Ten years later she is still working for Holmes, Gordon & Gibbs in Boston, specializing in civil suits, and positively rolling in money.

Her middle name is 映月(Ying Yue).

Personality

Prudence projects a cool, tough aura, and there is nothing fake about it. She has a short temper but years of experience mastering it. Power gives her a rush of pleasure in her public and private life both; surrender may be sweet, but even then Pru feels she needs to be in control. She is fiercely loyal, sharp-tongued, and never an easy touch.

History

The son of a Coptic Christian convert to Catholicism and the niece of a bishop, Connor grew up in County Cork, Ireland, under the triple powers of his mother, his father, and his maternal grandfather. From the first he inherited his delicate features; from the second, his profession; from the third, a phobia that has kept him wary of other people and so far complicated every relationship he has had. This is unlikely to change.

He now lives in London, where he is trying to set up a branch of Mansour & Sons and in the meanwhile working as Hunnicutt Antiques’ fabrics and clothing restorer. He rents a modest studio in Soho.

Personality

Connor is soft-spoken and unnervingly polite. He is driven by ambition but often too cautious and reserved to go after what he wants, which leaves him frustrated. That frustration sometimes bubbles up and bursts out in an unexpected, unplanned reckless act.

History

Amber was the only child of former Las Vegas showgirl Judith “Ditty” Cohen and her husband Uri Goldman, who she met while she was still performing. The pregnancy ended her career on stage. The couple moved to New York where they opened a bar. Uri disappeared a year later. Ditty kept the bar going for another fifteen years before retiring to write romance novels. She now lives on the outskirts of Atlantic City with two cats, Jasper and Geena. 

Amber ran away from home at sixteen to travel with a band. It took another ten years for her to reconcile with her mother. By that time she had begun and ended a number of careers, as roadie, model, security guard, saleswoman and even a stripper, a job she held for six months in a small town in Alabama. Not all her careers were as ethical. In her late twenties she pursued a course and graduated as a paralegal. It gave her the opportunity to settle down and work in an office… instead, she has used the degree to start another auxiliary career as a private detective. She has left a string of friends, ex-lovers and enemies across America.

She rides a red Harley she calls Annabel and both lives and travels with her Siamese cat, Mehitabel.

Personality

Amber is neither a villain nor a hero–she is trickster. She will screw you over for personal gain but help you out if it costs her nothing. You cannot make her like you. She either will or she won’t. For her, it’s about the bottom line, the number one, the only person whose love she truly desires: herself. 

Note: Amber was originally the one-episode character from the TV show Community and I played as her with other Community RP blogs. She quickly outgrew that brief role and I dare call her an OC now. The Community episode is no longer “canon” for this blog. Original blog was @amber-is-go.
